any fashion experts or pattern making or dressmakers out there? help me!!?

Question: i want to know what is exactly pattern making like for ex, patterns for pants, tops, or skirts ( all clothes). does patterns for pants that its a pattern on how to make pants & thats how all pants made? i just guessing. and do some patterns of a certain clothes can be used on another different clothes. which ones? thank u 4 ur help!!!

Answer: Patterns are made from blocks. The blocks are the basic shapes which are cut to make clothes. If you take an A line skirt as an example, the basic block is the shape that makes that garment. This can be adapted through pattern cutting techniques to give it a different line, drape, seaming etc. The basic bocks can be drawn using measurements but it is far easier to take a ready made block and convert it to what you need. I currently have a range of 40 simple blocks which I use to cut from. After I have finalised the pattern and made a toile I then grade to whatever sizes I want to range the design in. There are many books on the subject and if you want to be good it takes years of practice. I do it for a hobby these days but once you know the fundamentals you can have a go at recreating anything.
